Video websites are great for sharing your thoughts—whether they’re random or otherwise—with the world. In the last few years, entrepreneurs, advertisers, as well as marketing and public relations practitioners have been using sites like YouTube to gain publicity. Not everyone is successful, but some have made a name for themselves. Valentina Trevino created “Val’s Art Diary,” which is the name of her website, her YouTube channel, and Facebook page. Valentina shows viewers how she creates her paintings step-by-step. Her videos are entertaining and offbeat, but interesting. According to an article by Maria Puente, Val saw a significant increase in sales thanks to her YouTube Channel. “She says she gets up to 30,000 viewers an episode, and in 18 months she has sold 67 paintings at $500 to $5,000 apiece,” wrote Puente in USA Today.

Some companies spend thousands of dollars on expensive, top-of-the-line television ads that often fall victim to the DVR's fast-forward button or bathroom breaks. But other, social-media savvy companies, have turned to YouTube and other video sharing sites to create a buzz.

Think Super Bowl. What makes your favorite ads so memorable? It's humor. It's the ability to entertain with a personal feel. And sometimes it's about tackling a problem with a why-didn't-I-think-of-that solution.

YouTube subscribers can find most Super Bowl ads posted by several users, all of which have thousands of views. And while these ads made their debut on television, they employ the same tactics of successful YouTube ads.

I had never heard of Val's Art Diary before this assignment.  Being an artist myself, I am very interested in her promotional strategy.  Valentina Trevino videotapes herself actually creating a painting and, in addition to commentary about her process, she gives a more personal blogging commentary.  The two distinct sides of thevideo are made very apparent when she edits her video into a split screen; half focused on her in painting action, the other half being her own quirky, raw thoughts about the painting and much more.  Her versatility draws in viewers from the artistic side and the random blogger areas, widening her audience.

I think people respond positively to Valentina's artwork because her videos include everything and anything she is thinking; the good, the bad, funny, silly, strange.  Viewers are able to relate to her quirky personality and are more apt to pursue purchasing her pieces.

I think what Val is doing is very creative and a great way to sell her product. instead of just making an ordinary Website with pictures of her art work and prices she keeps a "diary" on Facebook and YouTube videos. I think the most interesting part is she has these videos of her making the art, so not only can you buy the painting but you can see it in the making. This is a great way to make her art more personal which is a great marketing tool for people to buy her art. She also does a great job with marketing by you are able to but her DVDs, she makes this fun and creative by adding a game to the DVD, this is something that i have never seen before.
