Where in the World is Google Earth?

Google Earth allows viewers to see satellite images of the Earth’s surface. This amazing feature is a great learning tool in discovering new aspects of outer space and the structure of the Earth as a whole. Images of buildings, terrains, streets, countries and surfaces, are just some of the numerous places and things available to look-up on Google Earth. Depending on the size of a area requesting to be viewed, the image will either present itself in 2D or 3D. The larger the area the more likely an image will only be in 2D. Gradation and visibility of a picture also depends on points of interest and popularity. Most land areas are covered with  around 15 meters of resolution or greater.

Over the past few years since Google Earth was implemented, there have been several features added to the program. From flight simulator to sky mode, there is a special feature for everyone. The flight simulator allows the ability to chose any location in the world and digitally fly to that destination. The pilot will than experience the obstacles of trying to land a plan in the chosen area. The sky mode feature publishes images form the Hubble Space Telescope when they are issued. This tool is used for educational and scientific learning purposes. Other notable features are Street View, Historical Imagery and Ocean. I found the ocean view to be very interesting. Satellite images make it possible to view beneath the oceans surface and view the 3D bathymetry beneath the waves.

In the past, there has been some controversy brought-up about privacy issues pertaining to  Google Earth and Google Maps. Some people feel there should be rules enforced on what areas users can look-up and view. Coordinates and addresses from most places around the world can be searched and found.  People who dislike Google Earth feel as if this program is an invasion of their own privacy. I, on the other hand, think this is a great tool and find it interesting to use. I am able to view places I would never imagine visiting or getting the opportunity to see. Overall, Google Earth is a fascinating tool amongst the variety of features in the Google family.
